Traditional medicine practitioners urged to be professional

Opanin Oscar Asamoah Donkor, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana Federation of Traditional Medicine Practitioners, has called on all traditional medicine practitioners to be professional in their dealings to earn respect and a positive standing in the competitive business of the day.

Opanin Donkor made the call at a monthly forum of the Federation in Accra yesterday.

He further called on all practitioners to do well to register with the Traditional Medicine Council (TPC) or else they will not be allowed to practise.

He noted that it is time to ensure that traditional medicine is well prepared and packaged to get it marketed in the country and on the international market to get more foreign exchange from it for national development.

Opanin Donkor said apart from TPC’s efforts to promote traditional medicine in Ghana, their federation is also doing well to offer in-service training to their members to improve upon traditional medicine practice in the country.

He noted that very soon they will dispatch a team of their experts to go to into the Bunso forest, in the Eastern Region, to gather herbs and other raw materials to produce more medicines to tackle all the new troublesome diseases that are springing up in the system.

He emphasized that a taskforce has been put in place to check undisciplined members, and urged all to patronize their monthly meetings to avoid being embarrassed out of ignorance of what to do as a member.

He said their doors are wide open for all members at the Arts Centre in Accra, where their meetings are held monthly to educate members on the do’s and don’ts of their vocation.

He called on the Ministry of Health and the Traditional Medicine Directorate at the Ministry to team up to ensure that this year’s Traditional Medicine Week, which was set up to be observed annually to promote the Federation is celebrated to further boost their operations positively.

Opanin Donkor said their executives will expose the quack ones among them who operate illegally in secret corners, before they spoil the work which the Federation most cherishes.
