The Weija-Gbawe constituency chapter of the Zongo Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken a swipe at President Nana Akufo-Addo and his Vice, Alhaji Dr. Mahammud Bawumia, over the Inner City and Zongo Development Ministry, saying they are deceiving Ghanaians.
Mr. Mohammed Adamu, Chairman for Weija NDC zongo caucus, cautioned the Zongo communities not to fall for the “lies and deception” of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government because they have no real plan for them.
According to him, the establishment of the Inner City and Zongo Development Ministry and the promise to establish a ‘Zongo Development Fund’ is a ploy to attract votes and not real development for the people from the zongos.
He told The Republic that the NPP resisted the decision to give Muslims public holidays just because they considered them a minority group that did not deserve it.
“I was a young boy then when former President Rawlings government wanted to give Muslims public holidays, the NPP resisted it. They kicked against it and wanted to go to court and in fact the NDC suffered before making that holiday coming to stay in our national holidays,” he said.
Mr. Adamu pointed out that the same people are today saying they love the Zongos and has established a “Zongo Development Ministry” to advance the cause of Muslims, but “it’s pure and absolute lies and political propaganda.”
He told the paper, while the NDC was making a case for the two days holidays to be awarded to Muslims, the NPP vehemently disagreed and resisted the move.
Nonetheless, he said the NDC made a case and ensured Muslims were given recognition with the two days holidays – Eid-Ul- Adah and Eid-Ul- Fitr.
Mr. Adamu stated that the zongo communities remained loyal to the NDC, despite a ministry being created and urged the people to watch the NPP closely for, “nothing good will come out from the Zongo Development Ministry to our benefits.”
Speaking on the NDC in the constituency, Mr. Adamu said, the caucus is waiting for the Professor Kwesi Botchwey-led Election Review Committee report before it unveils the activities to retain its core members towards the 2020 general elections.
He said, the NDC remains the most democratic political party in the country that has the developmental plans for Ghana, especially the Zongo communities.
In his considered opinion, the NPP, led by Akufo-Addo, would not bring anything good for the nation other than violence and intimidation meted out to innocent Ghanaians.
He noted that it is clear that the NDC has the roadmap for peace, unity and development and that Ghanaians now understand the difference and the party members must do away with acrimony among themselves in order to build a united front ahead of future elections.
The Weija NDC caucus chairman reiterated his conviction that the party has all chances of returning to power if all members work together and sacrifice their personal interest for the sake of the party and Ghanaians in general.
