For fear of losing the 2020 general elections following the early signs of abysmal performance as a government, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has initiated a destructive set of plots, aimed at setting the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), into a state of confusion and infighting to deny the people of Ghana an alternative government.
Despite the much-acclaimed landslide victory at the 2016 general elections, the ruling NPP fear being thrown out by Ghanaians at the next general elections, if the NDC overcomes all the odds and emerges in unity before the 2020 general elections.
One of their destructive plots is to ensure that there is bad blood between persons who once served under the immediate past president, John Mahama, and Flt-Lt (Retired) Jerry John Rawlings, former President and Founder of the NDC.
A source that revealed this to The Republic said this first strategy will make NDC faithful, especially those who love the former President and founder of the party and the party hierarchy, be at loggerheads, forcing former President Rawlings not to be interested in the NDC coming back to power.
Explaining why the NPP is bent on doing that, our source said, the Nana Akufo-Addo-led government is afraid that if the leadership of the NDC are solidly united and Rawlings participates actively in the affairs of the party, their stay in power will be shortened.
According to the source, Rawlings remains the pillar in the NDC and the Rawlings factor is huge and cannot be underestimated and that anything that will make the former President not to trust his own party people is to continue peddling falsehood and painting him negative, but attributing such negativity to his own party people to deepen the disunity between Rawlings and his party.
Therefore, they have to constantly sow the seed of disunity with unsubstantiated and fabricated news stories that have the tendency of distancing Rawlings from the party affairs, as the NDC embarks on reorganization ahead of 2020.
To do that, some sections of the media will from time to time come out with reports against Rawlings and sourced them to persons within NDC or better still those loyal to John Mahama.
In addition to that, the NPP is also cowed by the unofficial news that the yet-to-be released report of the 13-member Kwesi Botchwey Committee has recommended that former President Rawlings should be brought back to take his rightful place in the party.
With that The Republic gathered the ruling party and its propagandists are leaving stone unturned to chatter anything that will give Rawlings the chance to take centre stage in the politics in his own party.
As part of the means of covering up their plots, they are to always come in defence of Mr. Rawlings, while pointing out that the Akufo-Addo government will never denigrate the founder of NDC because he played a role in their victory as statesman.
Readers will recall that, Nana Akufo-Addo mentioned Rawlings and Kojo Tsikata in his maiden victory speech at his Nima residence soon after the Electoral Commission announced the 2016 presidential results.
The source said the NPP shall always use Nana’s mentioning of Rawlings and Tsikata to justify any argument linking them to any ill-worded reports in the media against Mr. Rawlings.
Aside from this”Rawlingsnomist,” the source hinted that, in the coming months, some NDC members, especially those who served under Prof. John Evans Atta-Mills of blessed memory and John Mahama governments, will be labelled with criminal court charges for police investigations.
And as a result of this, the source said, supporters and the party faithful will be distracted and busily engage in following their accused members at the courts.
“Well, believed me or not, what happened to Ibrahim Mahama was just to test the waters, the full gear is being planned and will be rolled out getting to the end of the year or early 2018. This is just to make the NDC lose focus and concentration. They will always be fighting for their people in the courts,” the source stated.
Those penciled down for political persecution and prosecution are ministers and their deputies, chief executives of state institutions and agencies, former metropolitan, municipal and districts chief executives and contractors perceived to be sympathizers of the opposition NDC.
The political raw deal to cut off the wings of the NDC from flying back to power would also ensure that business tycoons suspected of being sympathetic to the NDC are constantly harassed at the seaports and at the airports.
“My brother (referring to the reporter), If you know the plans NPP are plotting against NDC and their leaders, especially persons who worked under Atta-Mills and Mahama, you will weep for them. They can only survive if they take early decisions by ensuring that they get lawyers who are skillful enough to handle these our people,” the source disclosed.
The source expressed the fear that, should former President Mahama succeed in winning the NDC presidential primaries, that is if he contests, the NPP will use both the Rawlings factor and corruption allegation to further tarnish his image before the eyes of the electorate.
For the NPP, the source said, knew what they did to get to power will no longer yield good political dividend for them in the next general elections, hence the plots to distract the NDC in the name of fighting corruption.
The persistent utterances by some NPP communicators and appointees that the government intends taking the fight against corruption a notch higher by naming and shaming, our source said, are all plans to make NDC unpopular.
