Tema mayor saves kenkey seller from TDC taskforce

The Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Felix Mensah NiiAnnang-La, has gone to the aid of a kenkey seller in Community 1, Site 3, in Tema, who was manhandled by a taskforce of the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) lastweek.

In a move that has since generated applause, the mayor reimbursed the poor kenkey seller with the lost capital to restart her business.

Felix Mensah NiiAnnang-La also ordered the TDC, whose taskforce is very much disliked by many for their trademark brutish mistreatment of Ghanaians, to return utensils that it had seized from the kenkey seller, including cauldrons for boiling kenkey.

On Friday, October 27, members of the taskforce had stormed the kenkey joint located at Community 1, Site 3, and, without any preamble, attacked the business of the kenkey seller, capsizing and trampling on balls of kenkey and fish in the process.

The same gang of thugs had returned to the same place on Monday, October 30, and repeated the same action, causing the woman, who is said to have been plying her trade there for years, to lose her capital.

In the encore, the TDC taskforce had impounded the woman’s implements of trade, including cauldrons for cooking the kenkey, stoves, cups and plates.

The action of the TDC taskforce, which is already notorious for manhandling traders and inhabitants in the harbourcity, angered people of the Ashiboi Electoral Area who had reported the attacks on the woman to the media.

Media reportage has since brought the attacks to the attention of the Member of Parliament for Tema East, Daniel NiiKwartei Titus-Glover, who has since met with the woman to offer his sympathies.

Felix Mensah NiiAnnang-La, the mayor of Tema, whose attention was also arrested by reports on the issue, also met with the woman on Wednesday, but went beyond the sympathies to offer assistance.

The MCE donated an undisclosed amount of money to reimburse the woman for the capital that she had lost as a result of the two marauding attacks on her business by the TDC’ taskforce.

Hon. Annang-La, whose move has since been cheered by many, also ordered the TDC taskforce to return all the utensils that it impounded from the poor kenkey seller to enable her to restart her business.

The Kenkey Seller, Mrs. Georgina MacCarthy, after receiving the cash, thanked the mayor for the demonstration of love for her, saying “may God watch over the Temamayor and bless him with more showers.”

Assembly Members present, including Mr. Obed Quaye, Member for Ashiboi Electoral Area, were also full of praise for the Temamayor.

The development has since projected a conflict of authority between the TDC and the Temamayor, who is the legitimate representative of the President in the metropolis.

As at the time of going to press yesterday, the utensils that had been seized from the kenkeyseller were still in the possession of the TDC taskforce.
