… Assures Moslems of massive development
The Metropolitan Chief Executive for Tema, Hon. Felix Mensah Nii Annang-La, has been sworn in as the new president of the National Association of Local Authorities (NALAG), taking over from his predecessor, Hon. Isaac Ashai Odamtten, the former boss of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly.
He was sworn in by an Accra High Court judge yesterday at the NALAG head office in Accra.
He thanked NALAG for the confidence reposed in him, promising to work with all the members to uplift the status of the association.
In another development, Hon. Nii Annang-La has reiterated the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s beautiful thoughts and plans for Zongos around the country which is mostly inhabited by Muslims.
At a programme to commemorate this year’s Ramadan in Tema, the Mayor said the Zongo Development Fund established by President Akufo-Addo, along with other resources, will be used to bring to fruition plans to upgrade the lot of the Ghanaian Moslem.
“Our brothers and sisters in the Zongo communities have every cause to be hopeful. Just look around and in less than six months into the administration of His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo, the promised Zongo Fund is already in existence.
“This is just the beginning of greater things to come,” Hon. Felix Mensah Nii Annang-La said in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of a programme to mark this year’s Eid-Ul-Fitr at the Tema Sports stadium.
President Nana Akufo-Addo, in fulfillment of a campaign promise to upgrade the Zongos, has set up a whole ministry for the purpose of Zongo development.
The government has since also established a Zongo Development Fund into which an amount of $50million has already been channeled towards the upgrade of the Zongos.
Sector Minister, Boniface Abubakar Sadique, recently announced in Sunyani, the Brong Ahafo Regional capital, that the fund will be applied to building schools and hospitals in the Zongos along with the implementation of a scholarship scheme for Zongo dwellers.
He also said the Fund will, in addition, be applied to provide startup capital for entrepreneurs in the Zongos.
Hon. Hon. Felix Mensah Nii Annang-La, the Mayor of Tema, says that in addition to the fund, the Akufo-Addo government has other good things in mind for the zongos.
“Some of the zongo areas in the country will surely benefit from the one district, one factory policy for instance,” he said.
The Tema Mayor said the seriousness of the government about the policy is clear for all to see, saying a $15billion loan that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has acquired from China is to be applied for developmental projects all over the country, including the zongos.
Turning to Tema, Hon. Felix Mensah Nii Annang-La reiterated that Tema will also benefit from development under President Akufo-Addo, but revealed that at the moment, his preoccupation is beefing up security.
As Chairman of the Metropolitan Security Council (MESEC), he said he will continue to ensure the safety of the inhabitants of the metropolis by proactively ensuring peace.
The Tema Mayor, just a few months into the mayoral job, has already earned praise for proactive sense of duty that he has displayed so far.
Earlier in the year, mayhem had loomed in Tema New Town after the police there had mistakenly shot a resident in the belief that he was an armed robber. To forestall a reprisal of attack, the mayor got in the thick of mediation eventually calming down tensions.
Last month, he personally hired earthmoving equipment to clear flood waters that had trapped some residents in Community 2, earning praise from the Tema Mantse, Dr. Nii Adjei Kraku ll.
Again, last week, the Mayor was in action over confusion that had broken between staff working on the Tema Port expansion project and the police.
Hon. Felix Mensah Nii Annang-La’s mediation however restored calm.
“Tema is peaceful but these isolated incidents of friction do not make me happy and so I am focusing to ensure that these fracases are eliminated,” he said.
Hon. Hon. Felix Mensah Nii Annang-La used the opportunity to wish all Muslims in Tema a happy Eid-ul-Fitr celebration.
