Flt-Lt Jerry John Rawlings, the founder of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has charged party adherents to do away with corruptible characters in the party where others work for others to enjoy, before thinking of returning to power.
According to him, NDC has the better chance of holding the nation as a one party state, but issues of sincerity, faithfulness, truthfulness and integrity must be the principled guideline.
The former president was speaking at a rally in Ashaiman in the Greater Accra\ Region, as part of the party’s activities to mark its 25 years anniversary.
He said the NDC has veered off from the principles that brought it into political lane and that it was time for members to take sober reflection and do the right things before talking of unity.
The NDC founder blasted party leaders for not heeding to his advice prior to the 2016 general elections, noting that some of the policies the leaders allowed to dwell on the party were not the best.
“I have been hearing unity, unity, everybody is talking of unity in the party. That is fine, but you know something, that unity comes with a cost, it comes with a price, it is not about money, it is about truthfulness, it is about sincerity, it is about integrity,” Mr. Rawlings stated.
Talking on the reorganisation of the party, the NDC founder said, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could not have won the elections, but some of the bad nuts in the NDC wrongfully registered some people, thinking that after the party primaries, they voted against the same parliamentary candidates at the national elections.
Other speakers at the function included former President John Mahama, former Vice President, Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, National Chairman, Kofi Portuphy, General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrissu and host of other leading members of the party.
Key among the messages was unity and reorganisation towards the 2020 general elections.
John Mahama told the teeming supporters that, the issue of vigilante and lawlessness is eating into the fabric of the country body politics and if care is not taken such activities could destabilise the stable peace and vibrant democracy the people of Ghana enjoy.
He charged the party faithful to remain united ahead of the 2020 general elections and also rally behind any person the party picks as its presidential candidate.
Chairman Portuphy called on members to show interest in the party’s activities, especially when the register is opened for new membership registration.
General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketiah said, the NPP government led by Nana Akufo Addo would continue to blame the previous government until they leave power, stating that, in less than six months Ghanaians are feeling the pain of mismanagement of the economy and insecurity and feel regret.
Key members including Members of Parliament and former government appointees were present for the 25th Anniversary rally. A cake was cut to mark the 25th birthday of the party.
