…As Another Pastoral Personality Is Appointed To Chair NRSC Board
The open romance between the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has deepened, in spite of Jesus’ admonition to the Body of Christ to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.
The unholy matrimony between Church and politics, which is seen to have been long consummated by General Overseer, Dr. Mensah Otabil, and Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, just got sweetened with the appointment of another pastoral personality of the ICGC to a political post by the government.
On August 30, this year, Rev. Ismaila Hasmittson Awudu, Head Pastor of the East Legon branch of the ICGC (Yahweh Temple), was appointed Board Chairman of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC).
Transport Minister, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, who had inaugurated the reconstituted Board of the NRSC, had made the ICGC man of the cloth, chair of the Commission’s 10-member Board.
Tongues have since been wagging as the rope-a-dope between Caesar and the church, led by Pastor Mensah Otabil, gets a greasing to the elbow.
Prior to the appointment of Rev. Awudu, Rev. Mrs. Comfort Ocran, wife of Rev. Albert Ocran, senior Pastor at the ICGC, had been appointed to the Bank of Ghana Board by Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, who is a member of the church.
On the same BoG Board, Mr. Ofori-Atta has also appointed his business partner, Keli Gadzekpo, with whom he co-owns Databank, the bank which sponsored Nana Akufo-Addo’s campaigns through the years until he was third time lucky in 2016.
Databank has since had many people associated with it, transplanted into government, including the Finance Ministry, the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the National Investment Bank (NIB).
It is worth noting that the takeover of the Capital Bank, in which Pastor Mensah Otabil and the ICGC owned a total of 51%, along with the UT Bank, by the Ghana Commercial Bank, had been orchestrated by the BoG Board tainted with Keli Gadzekpo from Databank and Comfort Ocran from the ICGC.
Observers have not failed to see that the takeover had been choreographed by the Finance Minister, as a measure to save the investments of shareholders, like Pastor Mensah Otabil, through his Otabil and Associates and the ICGC, as the collapse of Capital meant all the investments of the shareholders were going to be lost.
The Member of Parliament for Bolga Central, Hon. Isaac Adongo, has said that the takeover was very unwholesome to the health of the GCB, whose majority shareholder is the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).
According to Hon. Adongo, the assets of both Capital and UT are toxic assets that the GCB does not need. The takeover makes the shareholders of both Capital and UT, now, shareholders of the GCB.
Sources from the GCB, whose Board was allegedly not consulted before the takeover, have since said they are shocked about the development because at the time that the takeover had happened, GCB’s health was so bad that it was laying off workers.
Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, a faithful congregant of the ICGC, has explained that he sanctioned the takeovers to help save the investments of some 300,000 depositors. In Capital, Pastor Otabil and the ICGC together owned some 51%.
In the wake of Capital’s collapse, the Finance Minister had been seen in Church one Sunday, emotionally commiserating with Pastor Otabil, who has since been called a ‘Pastorpreneur.’
Along with Mrs. Comfort Ocran, Board Member of the Bank of Ghana which took the decision to make the GCB takeover Capital and UT, they are said to have prayed fervently to God in Heaven, to help Pastor Otabil recoup his investments.
Apparently, it is at that same church service that Pastor Otabil later mounted the pulpit to insult his critics as, “people who look like insult.”
It is as Ken Ofori-Atta, a shrewd businessman-cum-politician with a scandal-prone mean-streak, and Pastor Mensah Otabil, man of God and General Overseer of the ICGC, publicly dance rope-a-dope, that the Akufo-Addo government, which has already become an extension of Databank, is also becoming an extension of ICGC.
As Board Chairman for the NRSC, Rev. Ismaila Hasmistton Awudu’s tenure will last for four years.
In that period, he will have to juggle his pastoral duties with his duties as the Chairman of one of ‘Caesar’s’ entities.
