…Say Ambassador at large job is an errand boy’s jo
Two former flag-bearer peers of Edward Nasigri Mahama, the People’s National Convention (PNC)’s Flag Bearer for the 2016 election, say it is an unfortunate parody that Dr. Mahama has accepted President Akufo-Addo’s appointment as an ‘Ambassador at Large.’
Dr. Hassan Ayariga, of the All People’s Congress (APC), is of the opinion that the amorphous position is a demotion of the longstanding pretender to the Presidency, while Chuck Kofi Wayo, founder of the United Renaissance Party (URP) thinks that Dr. Mahama’s acceptance of the position is a betrayal of the fact that the PNC flagbearer is a stomach politician.
Yesterday, Hassan Ayariga held a press conference at the APC’s head office in Accra to announce a host of enterprises that the party would soon be embarking on, including taking on the Electoral Commission for disqualifying him, the flagbearer, for disqualifying him in the 2016 elections.
However, in spite of the many news-points that emerged from that engagement with the press, his take on the Edward Mahama appointment was a massive attraction.
According to Dr. Hassan Ayariga, President Akufo-Addo’s appointment to Edward Mahama effectively makes the PNC’s 2016 flag bearer, “an errand boy.”
“It is good that President Akufo-Addo is attempting an all inclusive government but an Ambassador at Large simply means that Dr. Mahama is to be the errand boy of the President,” Dr. Ayariga later told The Republic in an exclusive interview.
He said per Dr. Nasigri Mahama’s longstanding experience as party flagbearer, the man is even senior to Akufo-Addo, as Akufo-Addo has been a flagbearer three times, while Dr. Mahama has been a flagbearer five times.
“This (Ambassador at Large) position is what you would expect young party boys still coming up to take, not Dr. Mahama,” he said.
The man, who had walked away from the PNC in 2016 after Dr. Edward Mahama had allegedly rigged the PNC’s presidential primary to beat him to become flagbearer then, said he wished Dr. Mahama well.
“This is a position that I would never accept as it is a total demotion of someone who aimed to become President, but if Dr. Edward Mahama believes that that being a ‘boy-boy’ is good for him, then fine,” Dr. Ayariga said.
In the case of Chuck Kofi Wayo, he said Dr. Mahama’s acceptance of the post shows that the man is poised to recoup something from all the investments that he made in the long time that he had been flagbearer.
“I believe though that it would have been appropriate to describe his post as ‘Ambassador at Small’ because his new post really demotes him from his position as Presidential hopeful.”
Wayo said Dr. Mahama’s acceptance of the appointment shows that he has no dignity, “because if he had dignity, he would see straight away that they are trying to insult him.”
Wayo wondered if Dr. Mahama would still be able to make a comeback for the Presidency after allowing himself to be so denigrated by a position so amorphous that even Ambassador Plenipotentiary holds some substance in comparison.
It is interesting to note that Hon. Kwabena Tahir Hammond, the MP for Adansi Asokwa, recently turned down an appointment by President Akufo-Addo to be the Chairman of a Board because he said the post was below his stature.
Hon. K.T. Hammond is only a former Deputy Energy Minister.
Meanwhile, the PNC has said that the party was not consulted by Dr. Mahama before the position was accepted.
Bernard Mornah, National Chairman of the PNC, told radio stations in Accra yesterday that he only woke up to hear the news of the appointment in the media and that neither President Akufo-Addo nor Dr. Mahama had informed the party of the appointment.
Apparently, the PNC is therefore summoning Dr. Mahama before a Disciplinary Committee over the issue.
