Hon Eric Opoku, Member of Parliament for Asunafo South Constituency in the Brong Ahafo Region has said, God would help fight his enemies who raided and damaged property in house during the Christmas festivities.
According to him, though he has trust in the Police services to deal with the matter extensively, he has the believe and conviction that God will fight his attackers, whom he alleged were sponsored by the sour-lose parliamentary candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2016 general elections, Mr George Yaw Boakye.
Mr. Opoku who is also the immediate former Brong Ahafo Regional Minister suffered cruel attack by some unknown gunmen in December last year, when he returned home after parliament recess.
Wielding locally made pistol and machetes, the attackers who are said to be members of the Kumasi based Delta Force, a vigilante group, stormed the Minority MP residence and destroyed several vehicles including an official Vehicle (Land Cruiser) with registration number GT9449-14.
Recounting the incident to THE REPUBLIC in parliament, the Minority Ranking Member on Food and Agriculture Sub-Committee of Parliament said , he has no reason to doubt his attackers were sponsored by embittered parliament candidate who suffered huge defeat at the 2016 polls.
Mr. Opoku said, prior to the attack he had received unprovoked warning by the attackers that he should stop allowing numerous constituent to trop into house as visitors.
“Soon after those warning, these boys came numbering seven or so on their motorbikes and started destroying vehicles that brought some of the visitors and then my Land Cruiser was also damaged. Fortunately once we have cameras in the house we were able to capture all of them on our camera,” he said.
The Minority MP who sound very absurd about the incident added that, despite overwhelming evidence of video footage provided to the investigation body of the Ghana Police Services, no action has been taken on the perpetrators till date.
“I know the police will not leave matter to die naturally, we are still counting on the them (Police), because apart from the video footage, the guys are people that are known very well, all those who perpetrated the act, I know them and most of them are close relatives of the NPP candidate I defeated in the [2016 parliamentary elections,” Mr Opoku stated.
Mr Opoku noted that, if the police said they could not trace the assailants, the should arrest the NPP parliament candidate in 2016 , because he is the prime suspect for he know he orchestrated the whole thing.
Notwithstanding, the Asunafo South lawmaker intimated that God the omnipotent and all seeing would fight the assailants even if the police chose to down played the enormity of crime committed against him by the NPP sponsored hooligans.
At the 2016 elections, Hon Eric Opoku of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) won by 52.97% votes haven pulled 20,618, while his closed contestant, George Boakye of the NPP also gained 18,091 votes representing 46.48 % of total votes cast in the Asunafo South constituency.
