Ghanaian Gay Wants Asylum From Trump

…As mass deportation looms

…Family claims he will be used for ritual sacrifice if he is deported

A Ghanaian expatriate in America, who is a homosexual, is seeking to use his sexuality to secure asylum in the wake of President Donald Trump’s mass deportation of Ghanaians living illegally in the United States.

Samuel Horace Quartey fears that if he is included in the long list of Ghanaian deportees on their way out of the United States, he will end up murdered in Ghana and used for ritual sacrifice.

An aunt of Mr. Quartey, Monica Aryeetey, has consequently written a letter to the United States Embassy in Ghana, pleading that her nephew be allowed to stay on in the United States on grounds of his sexuality.

“I am pleading with you, America, to give him a stay and not to let him come back looking at the consequences of him being beheaded and used as a sacrifice to please the gods of the land. I pray you hear my plea, as he is all I have got. I don’t have a child of my own,” a paragraph of Madam Aryeetey’s letter that The Gazette has seen states.

The letter has appeared in the wake of mass deportations of Ghanaians from the US. Barely a week ago, 63 Ghanaians had been tossed back from the States by the US government. Most of the deportees were in chains, a thing that sparked public outcry that eventually led to an invitation of US Ambassador to Ghana, Robert Jackson, by Parliament.

In March, this year, elders of Gbawe, a suburb of Accra, had put a GHc50, 000 bounty on the head of Horace Quartey as part of a manhunt over accusations of homosexuality, which is both forbidden by Ghanaian culture and laws of the country.

Apparently, the anger of the Gbawe elders had been kindled by the fact that Horace had had the anal sex near a shrine in the area. Michael Adamitey, Horace’ sex partner, has since been at large.

Madam Monica, who describes herself as an elder of the Gbawe area, writes that, “The act is strictly barbaric according to the customs and traditions of our land and the penalty for that is to be beheaded in accordance with the laws of the shrine.”

The troublesome anal sex escapade, according to Madam Aryeetey, happened on the 10th of February and when Horace and his partner were seen in the act, an attempt had been made to lynch them, forcing them to flee for their lives.

“On the 10th day of February 2017, he came home panting and panicking, saying he was seen by the shrine fitter in an act, I tried to calm him down after which he told me what he was caught doing. He said he was seen with one Michael Adamitey having anal sex in the shrine.

“The act is strictly barbaric according to the customs and traditions of our land and the penalty for that is to be beheaded in accordance with the laws of the shrine.

“After some few minutes past 5 pm, the gong- gong beater started beating his gong- gong to announce Samuel Horace Quartey’s ordeal and also to send the youth after him. Looking at how intense they searched for him and the punishment that awaits him, I advised he runs away for safety because I could no longer hide him. Minutes after he left, the whole house was ransacked thoroughly but there was no trace of him,” the letter said.

Several days after the escape, it continued, Horace who had been back on visitation from the United States when the incident happened called her from the United States in late February to inform her that he had fled back to the States.

Since then, however, President Donald Trump’s anti-immigration policy has seen many Ghanaians deported from the states with some arriving back in chains and this makes her apprehensive for her nephew.

“I am pleading with you, America, to give him a stay and not to let him come back looking at the consequences of him being beheaded and used as a sacrifice to please the gods of the land. I pray you hear my plea, as he is all I have got. I don’t have a child of my own.”

Madam Monica describes herself as one of the elders of the Gbawe traditional area. It is not clear if the name on the letter is her birth name or an alias.
