‘GENERAL MOSQUITO’ TO QUIT

…After 12 years in charge

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to miss its talismanic General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, aka General Mosquito.

‘The General,’ as he is fondly called, will not stand for reelection into the position, according to Deputy General Secretary, Koku Anyidoho.

Yesterday, Mr. Anyidoho revealed on Accra-based Neat FM that Asiedu Nketia has told him privately that he is not interested in occupying that office after effectively running it for 12 years.

Given Koku’s closeness with his immediate boss at the NDC Headquarters in Accra, the revelation has come as gospel.

The implication therein is that the NDC is set to lose one of its main talismans, a man who is popular for matching the ruling NPP boot for boot.

Since the announcement, social media platforms belonging to the ruling NPP have been buzzing with excitement with many rejoicing that a big thorn in the skin of the NPP is finally coming out.

Next year, the NDC opens nominations for positions at the branch, constituency, regional and national levels, ahead of the 2020 general elections.

According to Koku Anyidoho, Mr. Asiedu Nketia will not run for the General Secretary post again.

It is not yet clear if Koku himself will step up the plate and take over from the General.

Johnson Asiedu Nketia has served in the General Secretary position for 12 years and is widely tipped to win it again if he runs for it a third time.

In 2005, he had won almost 80 percent of the votes cast to become the third General Secretary of the NDC.

Under his leadership the NDC had come from opposition to win the 2008 election that brought President J.E.A. Mills into office.
In 2010, he had won reelection for the General Secretary position by a 93 percent margin.
