FINANCE MINISTER APPOINTS SISTER AS TDC MD

 – Akuffocracy spirals

…Instigating disquiet at the TDC which is gradually snowballing into an explosion

Embattled Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, whose feet are still being held to the fires of the KENBOND scandal, has allegedly repeated his careless presumptiveness in the sale of $2.25 billion bond, at the Tema Development Corporation.

President Akufo-Addo’s cousin of Finance Minister has allegedly given himself the benefit of the doubt and appointed his sister, Alice Ofori-Atta, as the new Managing Director of the TDC.

Alice, who is coming to the job as yet another ‘blueblood’ of the President’s family, is said to have been scheduled to take over at the TDC in a manner that  short-circuits the tenure of current MD, Joe Abbey, who is supposed to retire in 2018.

The alleged move by the Finance Minister is said to have instigated disquiet at the TDC which is gradually snowballing into an explosion, as Mr. Ofori-Atta’s appointment and moves to retire TDC’s old Board and constitute a new one is ultra vires.

Sources point out that only the President is clothed with the power to effect such appointments.

Even as the moves are ultra vires, Ken Ofori-Atta’s way about the whole agenda to plant his sister in place of Joe Abbey is also said to be happening at a pace too fast and too shabby.

It is said that the first meeting over the replacement of Joe Abbey with Alice Ofori-Atta came off on Monday, this week, in the Board room of the TDC at Tema, and the agenda was to dissolve the old Board and appoint a new one.

On that very day, the supposed new Board, headed by Acting Chairperson E. Mansa Bansa, wrote to Joe Abbey to step aside for a new MD, Alice Ofori-Atta, to take over from yesterday, July 11.

According to sources, the whole process of supposedly removing the old TDC MD and Board, and replacing them with the Finance Minister’s sister and others came to pass without a single noticeable direct input from President Akufo-Addo himself.

Apparently, the President who has received a lot of bad press for giving all the juicy appointments of statecraft to his family members, tried to hide behind the Finance Minister to appoint one more family member into public office.

Unfortunately, however, Mr.  Ofori-Atta did not take note to tip-toe well in the fronting job, rousing the whole cemetery with his macho marching orders to Joe Abbey to vacate his post one year ahead of time and at a short notice of just one day.

Now the knell has sounded on the Akufo-Addo government and the news is that ‘Akuffocracy,’ that interesting practice of democracy under Akufo-Addo which is defined as, ‘government of the Akuffos, by the Akuffos, for the Akuffos,’ has spiraled once more with the appointment of yet another of the President’s relatives into government.

Alice Ofori Atta, the supposed new TDC MD, is a direct sister of Ken Ofori-Atta, Finance Minister, who is the direct cousin of Akufo-Addo, the President.

Alice comes to add to the family bluebloods in power that include Attorney General Gloria Akuffo, who is half-sister to the President.

Gloria, is the paternal niece of currently appointed Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, who is the cousin of the President, as well.

Both Gloria and Sophia Akuffo had practiced as young lawyers in the Adabraka based law firm of the President, Akufo-Addo, Prempeh and Co.

David Asante Apeatu, the President’s half-brother, is also in charge of the Constabulary as the Inspector General of Police.

At the Water Resources Works and Housing is Samuel Atta Akyea, another cousin of the President. Atta Akyea is the brother-in-law of outgone Chief Justice, Theodora Georgina Wood, who has already been appointed to the Council of State by President Akufo-Addo.

Another cousin of the President, Kwesi Amoako Atta, is the Minister for Roads and Highways, while Nana Asante Bediatuo, a half-brother of the President, is Executive Secretary to the President.

Also, Daniel Akuffo, affectionately called Danny, a younger brother of the Attorney General, enjoys the benefits of his blue-blood as a member of the privileged Akuffo family, as he sits as the District Chief Executive of Shai Osudoku.

Other direct kinsfolk of the President who have been appointed into his government are Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, the President’s daughter, who is on the Creative Arts Council and Ingrid Nana Adjoa Hackman, wife of Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent cousin of Akufo-Addo’s who has been appointed to the Board of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation.

Mr. Asare Otchere-Darko himself is known to operate from behind the scenes as the de facto Chief of Staff, in spite of the figurehead, Akosua Frema Osei Opare.

In his shadowy role, Gabby is known to operate in like manner, as  Nana Yaa Ofori-Atta and Fredua Ofori-Atta, also family members of the President.

The Republic has heard that it is just a matter of time before these shadowy members of the Akuffo/Ofori-Atta/Akufo-Addo dynasty would be appointed into more official roles in the government of their kinsman President.

Duke Ofori-Atta and Michael Ofori-Atta were members of the 35- member Ghana@60 Committee that recently planned and executed the celebration of the diamond jubilee of Ghana’s independence from 6th of March, 1957.
