Akufo-Addo Suspends Denkyira West DCE

…But pampers Otiko Djaba and Rockson Bukari

Daniel Appianing, the suspended District Chief Executive for Upper Denkyira West, had in the wake of his removal, expressed shock that the news of his axing had come to his knowledge by courtesy of news on radio.

President Akufo-Addo, in relieving the DCE of his duties, had ignored basic politesse, including coining the President’s decision to remove him over his justification of the murder of the late Capt. Maxwell Mahama in routine officialese.

“Ever since this incident happened nobody has called to find out my side of the story. So if they are suspending me and it will be on radio without communicating to me that is their problem,” Mr. Appianing had fumed before handing over to the Deputy Central Regional Minister, Thomas Adjei Baffoe.

A comparison of the shabby treatment of Daniel Appianing to what the President had done to Gender Minister, Otiko Afisa Djaba and Upper East Regional Minister, Rockson Bukari, clearly pans out the fact that, with Akufo-Addo, it is different strokes for different folks when it comes to murder.

As Gender Minister and Upper East regional Minister respectively, Otiko and Rockson, walk under the heavy allegation of being masterminds of the dastardly murder of the late Adams Mahama, former Upper East Regional Chairman of the ruling party.

Almost two years after an acid attack that had led to the death of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Upper East Regional Chairman in May 2015, Northern Regional Chairman, Daniel Bugri Naabu, of the same party, revealed in March 2017 that the murder had been masterminded by Rockson Bukari and Otiko Djaba.

According to Naabu, the two had held secret meetings in Bolga and Tamale in the buildup to the murder of the late Mahama.

Following the allegation, there was public uproar with the family of the prime suspect being prosecuted over the murder, Gregory Afoko, calling for the arrest and prosecution of the two ministers.

However, rather than prosecution, President Akufo-Addo invited Bugri Naabu and Otiko Djaba, whose quarrel had released the cat out of the bag, to the Flagstaff House and ordered them to bury the hatchet.

Later, elders of the NPP had demanded a written apology from the two over the issue. Beyond that nothing else happened, as both Otiko Djaba and Rockson Bukari continue to stay in office as part of the supporting cast for President Akufo-Addo.

This fact is still fresh on the minds of the public that the President has suspended the Upper Denkyira West DCE, Daniel Appianing, for similarly shooting off his mouth over murder.

Mr. Appianing had caused public anger when in the wake of the lynching of the late Capt. Maxwell Mahama of the 5th Infantry Battalion (5BN) at Denkyira Boase, where the Captain was on detachment to fight galamsey, he had claimed that the murdered soldier had been killed for rather protecting illegal miners.

The insulting claim had caused uproar with many expecting the President to fire him, but even though the President did not fire him, the alacrity with which he suspended him was not employed in the case of Otiko Djaba and Rockson Bukari.

In this different stroke for a different folk, the President even did not do the polite thing of officially writing to the DCE to inform him of the decision to let him step aside as the government rather announced his suspension on radio.
