New Patriotic Party (NPP) firebrand, Kennedy Agyapong, has taken sides with US President Donald Trump, affirming and adlibbing Mr. Trump’s rant that Africa, along with Haiti and El Salvador, is a shithole.
In a recent interview in the UK, Mr. Agyapong backed the view that the richest continent on earth is a dunghill, calling the bluff of African Heads of States, including President Akufo-Addo, who expressed anger at the derogatory remark by Mr. Trump.
In fact in the London interview, Mr. Agyapong, who is a revered financier of the ruling NPP, told off African leaders, dismissing their anger over the Trump rant as hot air from people who are the chief architects of the shithole status of the dark continent.
“Honestly I have been a tough defender of Trump, but with this comment he had spoken the truth but the way he went about it is what is not good. There should have been some decorum. But If you assess African leaders and the way they have treated their people, what is wrong if the man tells you that those in a shithole?
“If you like you assess, the number or amount of money that is being pumped into African economies and yet still everyday we are beggars. Let’s call a spade a spade, what he has said is very true, may be it is just the way he said it that did not go well,” ken Agyapong said in Twi.
According to him, Africa is indeed a shithole because while the people suffer, their leaders, including President Akufo-Addo, loot their public purses to splurge on themselves and their children.
“You see how the statement has hurt African leaders, the AU. Let’s ask them, what Trump said, what exactly can you do about it for us to come out of the shit hole that he is talking about? They come and buy big houses, their children are attending big schools yet in my home town, you go there and see that the rooms in a house are in the state of a dug out mess which people use as toilets, in UK here, was it not somebody who sacrificed to make it so attractive to you that you have brought your children here?
“What he has said is spot on truth. Let’s learn from that and also change our attitude and build our countries also.”
Ken Agyapong’s position is a slap in the face of President Akufo-Addo, and other leaders on the African continent, who had rushed to profess anger at President Donald Trump’s derogatory remarks about the continent.
Mr. Trump described El Salvador, Haiti and certain African nations as “shithole” countries during a meeting with lawmakers at the White House last week.
“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Mr. Trump asked, after being presented with a proposal to restore protections for immigrants from those countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal.
The Washington Post reported the remarks citing aides briefed on the meeting.
Trump had demanded to know why the US would accept immigrants from these countries rather than places like Norway, whose prime minister he had met the day before.
Mr .Trump has received international condemnation for his comment, one of those criticisms coming from Botswana, whose Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation called on the US’s ambassador to Botswana “to express its displeasure at the alleged utterances made by the President of the US.”
President Akufo-Addo was one of the first African leaders who had publicly condemned the remark, doing so in plain language.
“The language of US President Donald Trump that the African continent, Haiti and El Salvador are ‘shithole countries’ is extremely unfortunate. Ghana is certainly not a ‘shithole country’. We will not accept such insults, even from a leader of a friendly country, no matter how powerful,” President AKufo-Addo had tweeted.
His sentiments had been shared by former President John Maham who had asked the African Union to protest. The AU Mission in Washington DC has since condemned Mr. Trump over the issue.
However, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, MP for Assin Central, differed. He says the condemnations are misplaced because President Trump had spoken the truth about Africa.
According to him, it is hypocritical on the part of leaders of African countries to condemn Mr. Trump over the issue because the African leaders are the main causers of the shithole predicament of Africa.
While at it, Mr. Agyapong also declared in the interview that all Ghanaians are naturally born bad and dishonest, advising that any Ghanaian in the diaspora who wished to put up a house should come down home and do it himself rather than trust other Ghanaians to do it for them.
According to him, whites and Ghanaians who travel to and live abroad are more intelligent than Ghanaians back home because the abundance of sunshine in Ghana makes Ghanaians back home, comparatively less intelligent.
“The (winter) cold here (in the UK) makes you more intelligent than us who live in the hot sun,” Mr. Agyapong said in Twi.
There is no scientific proof whatsoever that the abundance of sunlight causes stupidity.
