…Insists ‘The former President is following Kwesi Botchwey C’ttee ‘Thank You’ tour recommendation
The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Joseph Nii Ade Coker has shot down claims that suggest that former president John Dramani Mahama is engaging in an illegality following an announcement of an upcoming meeting schedule for Friday the 21st July, 2017.
A pressure group calling itself the Action Movement of the NDC in a statement issued in Accra on Monday described as illegal an impending meeting between ex President John Mahama and Greater Accra Regional Executives of the party.
The group through its Spokesperson, Kodzo Hamenya Keglo, said the NDC constitution is very clear on how meetings are held, adding that such meetings and outreach programs are always held under the auspices of the Functional Executive Committee.
It also noted that just six months after the humiliating defeat, Mr. Mahama is back on the field ignoring party structures and violating the party’s constitution with impunity all in an attempt to force himself on the people for a selfish one term.
But speaking during an interview with this paper, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC denied vehemently such allegations and falsehood peddled by this group and even questioned groups locus standing within the framework of the party structure since following the 2016 elections, the National Executives Committee of the party disbanded all affiliate groups that mushroomed or emerged during the course of the 2016 campaign.
Mr. Ade Coker confirmed an impending meeting with all party regional executives, former ministers; former MMDCE’s with the former President John Mahama in Accra and noted that such move was part of recommendations made the Kwesi Botchwey Committee Report which is geared towards reconciliation.
“There is a rule for any member who is aggrieved by the party or aggrieved with anything that has got to do with the party to write officially to the party through the process so that the party would interrogate it what the process, but if you go the tangent others are going creating unnecessary division within our party which we are saying per the Kwesi Botchwey Report to come together reconcile the party and move forward to 2020. So anything to reconcile the party is paramount and so if President Mahama is coming to the region, he is not coming to campaign he is not coming to steal head leg over anything, he is coming with elders of the party to look at how all of us can unite for the party to move on,” he said.
According to the Greater Accra Regional Chairman, he together with his executives, has already initiated an exercise by visiting some constituencies within the region with the sole aim of reorganising, reviving the various party’s branch and assuring the executives at that level of the party’s commitment to revamp and solidify the structures of the party.
He further insisted that former President’s upcoming meeting with the party’s regional executives have nothing to do with any campaign for the NDC 2020 presidential slot, but rather he is going by the recommendations of the Kwesi Botchwey Committee which suggests that the former president embarks on a national ‘Thank-You’ tour to officially thank members and supporters of the party for their dedication and support in the 2016 election. He then disclosed that the former president has already visit the Eastern Region for the same purpose.
“He should embark on a Thank-You tour using regional executives, regional caucus and opinion leaders and past government appointees and all those things. And this has already taken place in certain regions it is in Greater Accra that we have to inform, we have a platform for regional executives and regional caucus that’s where the secretary put on the platform and someone has also taken that information out trying to cause mischief.”
