Achimota Melcom Bounces Back

…As Ghana’s most popular chain store launches virtual market online

The Achimota branch of Melcom, Ghana’s most popular chain store brand, has bounced back, rising up like a phoenix from the ashes of the November 2012 disaster, which saw its building cave in.

Yesterday, the popular chain store commissioned a brand new building that it has built to replace the collapsed one.

Melcom’s Director of Communications, Mr. Godwin Avenorgbo, announced that the new building, which is located opposite to the main Neoplan Station, is fully owned by Melcom, unlike the one which collapsed in 2012.

That one had been rented.

“Melcom has made it a policy to adhere to a continuous quality assurance with regard to maintaining structural integrity on all our buildings in favor of public safety.

“In exercise of this policy, we have ensured that structural integrity tests are conducted on all Melcom occupied buildings either rented or constructed by us for our operations in all the regions of Ghana be they offices, shops, factories, warehouses, etc.”

Mr. Avenorgbo had underscored the fact that Melcom had really learnt its lesson from the November 2012 shop building collapse, which had happened with a structure that it had rented from someone else.

The new Achimota Melcom building is designed to be a four- storey reinforced concrete (RC) structure with a single level basement parking lot. The total plot size is 0.7 acre. The building also has a concrete roof-top with parapet walls to serve as roof- top patio.

It has a basement car park that is 18,000 square feet big enough to accommodate 48 cars at a time.

To ensure the architectural integrity of the building, Melcom had contracted a structural Engineer, Ing. Frank Fiifi Yawson, to oversee the construction.

Yesterday, as part of initiation of the building, Melcom had launched its virtual market place to expand its current network of 37 branches nationwide in the building.

Before guests that included Miss Ghana 2015, Antoinette Delali Kemavor, model Victoria Michaels and bankers, was officially launched by Melcom Group Chairman, Mr. Bhagwan Khubchandani.

Mr.  Avenorgbo explained imperativeness of Melcom’s virtual Market Place, saying “We have created Melcom Online as an enhancement of the Melcom Shopping convenience from any location in order to save time, travel distance and expense.”

The new shopping experience with Melcom entails the simple usage of internet gadgets, including android phones and computers.

After registering on, the customer is presented with a display of items to choose from with the help of a feature bar. The customer then is presented with a choice to select payment preference.

Mastercard, Visa, Mobile Money and cash on delivery are the available choices by way of payment.

If your preferred payment is cash then the item will be delivered to you at a location before you pay for it. A customer also has the option to pick up the purchased item from the nearest Melcom shop.

Mr. Avenorgbo also announced that Melcom has an electronic payment conduit through Stanbic Bank.

“As soon as payment is received, Melcom quickly dispatches merchandise to a preferred location for pick up by the customer. In connection with delivery at the customer’s preferred location, we are pleased to associate with Skynet Express, a company with many years of experience in safe, secure and fast delivery.”
