Sierra Leone MP Rally ECOWAS Parliament For Girl Child Right

Hon. Veronica K. Sesay, leader of the Women caucus in the National Assembly Sierra Leone has called Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) to support the country “Get Hands Off Our Girls ” campaign to protect the right of girls in the subregion.

Madam Sesay launched the campaign when the Sierra Leone delegation took its turn to present the country Report at the ECOWAS parliament last Thursday November 28,2019, in Abuja, Nigeria.

While presenting the Sierra Leone report, She urged her colleagues to push the agenda home in their various countries.

“We are talking about our girl child we should take this message to our communities and stakeholders who want to compromise our girls, the message should go to lectures and teachers who give who give free marks to this girls”.

She further pointed out to her colleague lawmakers to step up the campaign and ensure the information starts from the ECOWAS parliament.

With that, she said “we can have more women in this Parliament, here in this Parliament and back in our countries it is male dominated, if you get your hands off these girls, they would be strong and more vibrant please pass on this information for us. Let your people leave the girls to be, so that boys would be boys, girls would be girls, men would be fathers and of course mothers would be mothers”.

Madam Sesqy Girl Child rights campaign, appeared to have drew strong approval from colleagues on the floor of the House, with some applauding her effort to seek the welfare of girls in the subregion.

Most of her male colleagues who thought of her country’s report acknowledged her ,whilst asking questions regarding happening in Sierra Leone.

Madqm Sesqy in her report said, the country has been experiencing frequent reports of rape cases against young girls and women and called for support from the ECOWAS female and male parliamentarians.

The situation she indicated, had made the country First Lady, Fatima Bio, embarked on a district level “hands off our girls” campaign.

The ideas is to seek support from the locals to end sexual and gender base girls violence with emphasis on rape.

Also the sexual offenses Act 2012 was amended on 19th September this year, the Act sets the age of consent at eighteen, whiles the new law criminalises sexual harassment an marital rape, this has increase the maximum penalty for rape and sexual penetration of a child from fifteen to life imprisonment.
