Hon. Majisi receiving his award
Hon. John Majisi, Member of Parliament for Krachi Nchumuru has been presented with an award for his outstanding contribution to the empowering and improving the lives of Persons Living With Disability(PWD) in the country.
He received one of the highest awards by Ghana Disability Excellence Awards (GDEA) for advocating for people living with disability, training and helping to rehabilitate most of them for social inclusion.
The categories of awards were Extraordinary Achiever in Disability Award, Excellence in media advocacy and right promotion Award, Excellence in disability Employment opportunity Award and Excellence in disability education and training Award.
The rest were Excellence in disability health care Award, Excellence in social participation Award, Excellence in disability innovation Award, Excellence in Leadership Award,
Disability campaign of the year Award, Disability social worker of the year Award and Student Advocacy group of the year Award.
Hon Majisi was adjudged the best Excellence in promoting and advocating for social participation of persons with disability(PWDs), upon scrutiny and vetting of work done amongst several nominees for that category of award.
The citation of his award reads, “We honoured you for your outstanding effort in employing the method of participation amongst persons with disabilities in Ghana.”
Other individuals and organizations who have contributed to the promotion of the lives of persons with disability were also honoured at the Maiden Edition of the Ghana Disability Excellence Awards held on Saturday, September 28, 2019.
In his remarks after receiving the Award, Hon. Majisi thanked the organizers and promised to do more for humanity, especially people living with disability.
He promised to continue to push for inclusion of persons with disability and implementation of laws on disability in the country.
He assured of using all available platforms including parliament to make living somehow comfortable for the vulnerable in society.
The Legislator, however, appealed to government to expedite action on the inclusive education for persons with disability so they could have access to quality education.
Mr Majisi further called on Ghanaians and members of the general society to accept inclusive education policies and as well as respect persons living with disability.
The Ghana Disability Excellence Awards (GDEA) is an annual awards ceremony which recognizes the outstanding achievements of individuals, organizations, services, initiatives of disability and disability support workers who have over the years provided a high standard of support to increase the quality of life and inclusion of persons with disability.
The award system instituted by Friends of the Nation (FONGhana), a local NGO in collaboration with Ghana Federation of Disability Organisation, sought to appreciate persons who in diverse ways have contributed in empowering and improving the lives of Persons Living With Disability.
The Excellence Awards also recognizes that individual persons living with disability who have also distinguished themselves in many different ways.
Also present at the Excellence Award was Ranking member on Education Committee of Parliament and MP for Akatsi North, Hon. Peter Nortsu -Kotoe.
Nana Oye Ainuson of FONGhana, said the awards are aimed at recognizing the efforts and contributions of people who had distinguished themselves by way of changing the plight of the disabled members of society, and to encourage others to emulate same to empower and improve the well being of persons living with a disability.
According to her, the Excellence Awards would serve as motivation for the awardees, thus the individuals and organisation to continue to offer support to PWDs in the country.
She stressed the need for persons with disability to be supported as they are faced with a high level of discrimination in accessing education, health and employment opportunities and also get stigmatized in society.
The awardees includes Excellence in employment opportunity award went to Standard charter bank, Excellence in innovation and technology award went to Derrick Omari of Tech Era, Excellence in education was honoured to Star Ghana and Disability media advocate award went Alice Ayiety of (Ghone TV.

Extraordinary disability achiever in sports went to Alem mumuni, Extraordinary disability achiever in journalism went to Paul Anoma Kordie and Excellence in providing social participation was presented to Hon. John Majisi, MP for Krachi Nchumuru.
The rest were Disability campaign of the year went to Verna changing lives, a mineral water company, Excellence in health care award went to Adepa Pharmacy, Student advocacy group of the year award went to Disability Talkers, Excellence in training award went to Ghana blind and Excellence in leadership award went to Aunty Getty.
