Member of Parliament (MP) for the South Tongu Constituency in the Volta Region, Hon. Kobena Mensah Wisdom Woyome has pledged his commitment towards consolidating the gains of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in his constituency in order to secure a resounding victory for the flagbearer of the party, former President John Dramani Mahama in particular and the NDC party in general.
According to him, the signs are visibly written on the walls that Ghanaians are yearning for the return of the NDC to continue what he described as its unfinished and legacy agenda for the good people of Ghana.
Mr Woyome made these Comments after he has filed nomination forms and vetting last Friday in Sogakope.
Hon Kobbys who is seeking for his South term is being contested by one person after the closing of nomination forms to contest the parliamentary seat.
He told Journalists, he has chalked a lot of successes for the people of South Tongu for which continuing with his service to mankind in collaboration with former President Mahama would bring increased development and progress to the constituency.
The MP mentioned the construction of physical structures in the health, education and other sectors, not forgetting scholarship for thousands of pupils and students to enable them access quality education at all levels as some but a few of his huge achievements.
The MP’s support for skills and apprenticeship development including the provision of equipment support and start-up capital for several trainees has been enormous. These beneficiaries include seamstresses and tailors as well as hairdressers and beauticians. Also assisted by the MP in their numbers are mobile phone repairers and vulcanizers who on different occasions received one form of support in the form of working tools and equipment or the other from Mr Woyome.
Mr Woyome urged the chiefs and people of the constituency not only to continue to support him but also repose their confidence in him to deliver his promises to uplift the image of the district.
He contributes a lot on the floor of Parliament where about 80% of its work is carried out at the committee level. The MP has been very instrumental in piloting the enactment of a number of Laws in the House. Notable among them include the National Sports Act, Act 934 which established the National Sports Authority (NSA), the Development and Classification of Film Act, 2016 as well as the National Youth Authority Act, 2016, Act 939 which saw the establishment of the National Youth Authority in 2016. Earlier in 2015, the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) was also established under the Youth Employment Act 2015 (Act 887) to empower young people to contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic and sustainable development of the nation.
One of the major challenges facing residents living along the banks of the Volta Lake for several decades has been the issue of water-borne diseases such as bilharzia infection as well as acute potable water problems resulting from the silting of the river and the continuous enormous growth of aquatic weeds on the Lake.
In an effort by the MP to help address some of these challenges, there were a number of reports and statements in the Legislature attributed to MP Woyome on these challenges particularly for the inhabitants living within the Lower Volta enclave of the river. As a result of some of these interventions by the MP, institutions such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Volta River Authority (VRA), the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) as well as their affiliate agencies variously attempted some work on the issue to alleviate the suffering of the residents. One of these success stories was the initiation in 2016 of a process by the previous Board of the VRA under its Chairmanship of the late Hon. Lee Tandoh Ocran to award various contracts for the removal of these aquatic weeds and the subsequent dredging of the entire Lower Volta Basin which the current government is continuing from where the NDC left off.
Hon. Woyome was the Chairman of the Committee on Youth, Sports and Culture between 2013 and 2017. From 2017 to date, he has been the Shadow Minister or Ranking Member of the Committee. By virtue of all these leadership positions, Mr Woyome helps to oversee the work of two ministries namely, Youth and Sports as well as Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs. The Committee is also partially responsible for the Tourism, Culture and Arts Ministry.
He used the opportunity to reassure his constituents that he would continue to remareassured, result-oriented, proactive and resolute in tackling all the challenges that continue to confront the good people of the South Tongu constituency. This, he said would be done through well-targeted or strategic lobbying for resource mobilization to complement the work of the District Assembly. He also gave the assurance that he would continue to be a role model particularly for the youth who are growing up to become the future leaders of the country.
