Residents of Adenta and Madina within the Eastern enclave of the Greater Accra Region,mare enraged by the government decision to put up over 400m winding footbridge to control the knock down of pedestrians on the Accra to Dodowa dual courage.
The footbridges which are part of the road project were abandoned uncompleted and had to series of highway knock-downs of pedestrians,especially on the Adentan stretch of the busy road.
It resulted in the death of some pedestrians including a Senior High School student of the West Africa Secondary School(WASS) at Adenta Barrier.
The situation at the time led to a spontaneous reaction by irate residents within the area who resorted to a number of demonstrations including the blockage of the highway and burning of tyres to draw attention of the government to their plight.
As at Monday April 29, some pedestrians were seen walking on the footbridge to cross over the highway, while the contractors, were still busy doing some concrete works on the basement of the bridges.
At the Assembly Bus Stop, one of the main intersections on the highway, work on the footbridge had been completed, while at the SDA junction, workers were seen fixing guardrails and making other fortifications on the footbridge.
When modernghana visited the footbridge project site at Madina Zongo Junction near the Prudential Bank,works on one side has been completed, while workers were also seen fixing guardrails on the Baptist School side of the footbridge.
Workers of Core Construction Limited at the West Africa Senior High School section were busy working on the ramps of the length structure and gave an assurance that work will be completed on schedule.
But Some residents and sections of the public who started using the Adentan portion of the footbridges, have expressed concerns about the length and nature of the access ramps on the bridge.
The footbridges per measurement are about 500m in total from one end to another to be able to cross.
A supervisor on site, who identified himself as Kwame, said they were on course to finish all works by the end of this month and asked pedestrians to exercises restrain for them to complete their work.
He explained that the length and winding nature of the footbridge was because of space constraint as well as make the bridge disabled friendly.
Government have to reward the contract on the footbridges to new contractors after the residents staged a two day protest over serious of known down of pedestrians.
