Former President John Dramani Mahama and his wife, Lordina on Thursday morning visited Mrs. Opare Hammond and the family to commiserate with them on the death of the former Member of Parliamet for Adenta, Mr Opare Hammond.
Mr. Mahama who was out of the region on political campaign to lead the National Democatic Congress (NDC) when the sad news occurred last week, cut short his tour to the Volta Region and returned to Accra yesterday.
Accompanied by Deputy Minority Leader of Parliament, Dr James Klutse Avedzi, former Parliamentary Candidate for Adenta, Hon Adamu Ramadan and some Constituency Executives of the NDC in Adenta, President Mahama consoled the widow and family, signed the Book of Condolence and eulogized his former colleague MP, between 2005/2008.
Speaking to the family, the former President noted that the late Adenta lawmaker was not only a colleague MP in parliament, but a closed friend on th opposite side of the political divide, stressing that while in parliament they have work together to strengthen the Legislative arm of Government.
Mr. Mahama described the late Parliamentarian as a man who knew what he was about, indicating that he was a very good politician not only to his part bu pt the country as a whole.
“He served the country and his constituency with distinction, he was a perfect gentleman, Indeed I must say that, no amount of consolation can take away the grief of lose of Hammond,” he added.
Rev. Opare Obuobisa, on behalf of the Hammond’s family thanked the former President for taking off his busy his schedules to mourn with the family.
He assured that, the family would officially brief and inform him of the funeral of the late lawmaker.
Until his death, the late Opare-Hammond was the Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC).
Mr Hammond was reported dead at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on Friday January 11, 2019 where he was on admission receiving treatment after a short ailment.
The the former MP for Adenta Constituency worked at the NPP headquarters before he was relieved of his duties in 2014
Upon assumption of the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, he was appointed the Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) in 2017
Under his reign, the PMMC and the Ghana Royal Gold Limited Company entered into a partnership to construct a state-owned gold refinery which is expected to create 1000 jobs in 2019.
The family is yet to officially announce his death to the presidency and the party.
