Opposition National Democratic Congress( NDC ), has set up three separate committees to oversee the party upcoming presidential primaries slated for Saturday January 26, this year.
Deputy General Secretary, Peter Otukonof Boamah, who addressed the press at a function to inaugurate Committees said, the committee were set after deep consultations with all stakeholders within the party.
He stated that the three working committees which comprised Vetting, Appeals and Electoral, would among of other things vet, hear appeals ( if any) after vetting and cooperate with the Electoral Commission of Ghana( EC) to conduct, free and fair elections to select a suitable candidate for general polls in 2020.
Mr. Otokunor assured that, the national executives would do everything humanely possible to ensure that, the presidential primaries is conducted devoid all kinds of biases and to the satisfactory of all contestants.
He added that, the functional executives have consulted all the aspirants before the committees are set, stressing that all these are to ensure that they have a fair playing field.
The Vetting Committee hasHon. Nii Okaidja Adamafio, Chairman, Minority leader in Parliament Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, Deputy Minority leader Hon. James Klutse Avedzi, Prof. Steven Kedi of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Kwaku Danso Boafo, former ambassador to UK, Ambassador Oscar Amenyewidoe and Nancy Amarteyfio as members.
The Appeals Committee has Hon.Edward Doe Adjaho, former speaker of Parliament, Hon. Cletus Avoka, Ambassador Dan Abodakpi, MrYaw Boateng Gyan, a former National Organizer and Madam Alice Otuteye as members.
Mr Kofi Attoh, Director of International relations, is Chairing Electoral Committee with Ag director of elections Bede Ziedeng, former Deputy general secretary Koku Anyidoho, Minority chief whip Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, Lawyer Abraham Amaliba, Dr. Catherine Deynu and Alhaji Haruna Rashid as well as the party election directors from the all 10 regions.
The Committees took oath of Secrecy to serve the party supervised by Ms Barbara Serwaa Asamoah, a Deputy General Secretary.
The terms of reference of the Vetting Committee are to ensure the aspirants are qualified per the the 1992 constitution as well as the party constitution and guidelines, while the Appeals committee are to receive and hear all complains and grievances(if any) after vetting and before elections and report to the party leadership.
The Elections Committee on the other hand is to ensure the entire election process is credible, procurement of ballot papers and cooperating with the EC which would Returning Officer for the General Secretary to announce the winner.
The Committee members were later given copies of the party constitution to help guide them in their work as committee..
The NDC has set 26 January , 2019 to organize its primaries. Seven candidates will be vying in all including former President John Mahama.
Some members of the party has challenged the guidelines at the law and secured a ten day injunction but leadership of the party has assured that they would cross all legal barriers and ensure the presidential primaries comes off without any hindrance.
