Hon Bernard Ahiafor, Member of Parliament for Akatsi South of the National Democratic Congress , NDC has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is appropriating the achievements of the John Mahama administration and taking glory for them.
The MP stated that instead of taking the glory for NDC achievements, the NPP and President Akufo Addo should make haste and activate the various economic outlets which have been stagnated as a result of their obvious inability to articulate a clear-cut economic policy for the nation.
Hon Ahiafor raised the concern when an Irrigated Dam Project which was initiated and completed between 2015/2016 at Atidziveyi, in the Akatsi South constituency, was listed among irrigation Dam projects initiated and completed in 2017 by the NPP government.
The Report of the parliamentary select committee on Food Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs on the AnnualBudget Estimates of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture for the year 2019 fiscal years has captured said Dam project been one initiated in 2017 and completed.
The report claimed that, “The Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA), continued the development of irrigation projects initiated in 2017. These included Tamme Phase I Dam which is84 percent complete and the fully completed Zakpals, Kormorkl, Uwasi, Atidziveyi-Ayitekorfe and Aka Basin Dams, making available hectors of land for irrigation.”
This, Hon Ahiafor told THE REPUBLIC in an interview, it was disappointing that a government which came to power on claims of high moral ground, rather than focusing on delivering its promises, is dancing around the achievements of the previous government in an attempt to make the public believe that recorded successes in critical sectors are theirs.
He said, it was difficult to explain NPP spirited effort to make the public believe that the Atidzive Dam was built in 2017 , when in natural fact, “this dam sod was cut in 2015 and works completed in 2016.
“At the time I was lobbying for this project, the current Minister for Food and Agriculture, Mr Owosu Afriyie Akoto, was the Ranking member on Food, Agriculture and cocoa Affairs Committee of parliament and Fifi Fiavi Kwertey, was the Minister for Food and Agriculture. ”
“We all know that, that irrigation dam started in 2015 and completed in 2016 under the NDC of President John Dramani Mahama government. We know that the NPP government made sweet promises with sugar-quoted words to Ghanaians to build one Village and one Dam
Has never come to fruition and demanded a swift retraction from the government.
He averred that, the NPP since 2017 it came to power has never done even a dough-out in the whole of Akatsi-South constituency as part of their IDID, stating that, “what is unfortunate to the government, is that the project is my village and I am the one who lobbed the Minister for the project.
The MP was on the floor when the Ministry of Agriculture budget estimate was laid with the claims, but he exposed the Government right on the floor of parliament, while the Minister was sitting helpless and shameless in the chamber.
Mr Ahiafor who is Vice Chairman of the Subsidiary Legislative Committee of Parliament stated that, the second project at Torvie which commenced in 2015 and completed in 2016 was funded and executed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) .
Again, mother MP said, feasibility study has already been carried for similar irrigation projects at Wute-Klokpi and Havi-Suipe communities respectively in the Akatsi South District and that, if the NPP government was mindful of undertaking any irrigation projects for the people of Akatsi South, then the government should initiate works on those projects and stop stealing projects commenced and completed by the NDC government.
The Akatsi South lawmaker, was a member of the Agriculture Committee during the Sixth Parliament and currently, acting as a friend of the committee and seized with the facts regarding those irrigation projects in his constituency.
He further told the paper, there are evidence including the sod cutting which was done with durbar if chiefs, among other things to that effects and urged the NOP and the Minister to stop the political thievery and deliver on their promises.
He added that, it was an obvious fact that before the January 7, 2017 handover to the NPP, the people of Akatsi South were already sourcing water from that Irrigation Dam projects, under the watch of the NDC government.
He further noted that instead of trying to poach achievements to earn an undeserved praise, the NPP and its government should brace up, articulate a precise economic policy, assemble an economic team and urgently commence the delivery of their promises for which they were voted.
In his considered view, it was unacceptable not withstanding the reasons being adduced, for a government in a democratic setting to run for two years without any development project in Akatsi South and any pragmatic policy whatsoever.
The MP called on Ghanaians to continue to pray for President Nana Akufo Addo, who for obvious reasons is surrounded by people whose divergent personal interests have become a huge burden on our dear nation.
