Hon Rudolf Nsowine Amenga-Etigo, Member of Parliament (MP ) for Chiana/Paga Constituency in the Upper East Region, has initiated community driven development policies to reduce high level of poverty in the constituency.
The Poverty Reduction Initiative projects which formed part of the MP’s vision for the constituency are aimed at empowering communities to connect people with opportunities that would help them move on a path of economic independence.
According to him, some of the constituents struggle to pay school fees of their wards, whilst unemployment also remained high, especially among the energetic youth.
Mr Amenga-Etigo, a Deputy Ranking member on Work and Housing Committee of Parliament, made these known after he had presented building materials for self assisted CHPs Compound in some communities within the constituency.
He told THE REPUBLIC, the focus is on education, health, agriculture, water and sanitation, youth and sports, and community centres.
Sounding very passionate on the need to reduce poverty level among the people, the lawmaker reiterated his commitment to use the available resources as MP to help deal with the poverty menace among his people.
He however charged the constituents, not to throw their hands in despair but rather rally behind him to deliver, stressing that initiating and implementing policies to reduce poverty remained his priority.
Under the education support programme, the MP has granted Scholarship to over 270 students pursuing various courses at the Senior and the Junior High Schools as well as those Tertiary Institution.
In addition to that, he had assisted some ongoing projects including a library project in Sirigu community and provided dozens of roofing sheets, woods and nails for completion of some basic education facilities at Wolingum, Aninsore, Pingo and Tazika/Bagtua.
To make physical education lively at the basic schools within the constituency, Hon Amenga-Etigo, further provided some sporting equipment for the construction of an athletic oval with football and volleyball pits at the Mirigu senior high school.
On health and its related problems in the constituency, Lawyer Amenga-Etigo as he is affectionately called by the constituents, made available a pickup to provide emergency transportation services, especially pregnant women when due for labour
To ensure that the health needs are met without much difficulties, the MP also earmarked an amount of GH C 60, 000 for the extension of some health facilities at the Paga, Kassena/Nankana East Health Centres and Kanania CHPS Compound.
He also procured benches and chairs for all CHPS Compounds across the constituency and in addition to street lights.
Touching on Agriculture which is the major occupation of the constituents, Mr Amenga-Etigo at the last season provided 60 water pumping machines, 150 knapsacks to farmers across the constituency and also assisted some of the farmers with seed capital to support their farming activities.
He further promised to provide more of the water pumping machines for farmers to engage in irrigation as he lobby intensively with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture through Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA) to support them with fertiliser.
WATER AND SANITATION
On the issue of water which remained the most needed basic necessity in human live, Hon Amenga-Etiga,upon assumption of office as MP, repaired over 52 broke down boreholes throughout the constituency.
Additionally, he is drilling of a number of mechanised borehole for some educational institutions at Chiana, Paga and Mirigu, to provide water for students.
The MP who is an experts in water issues in the country before entering parliament has also intervened and bailed out Sirigu community to pay off accumulated water system debt of GHS15,000.00
Mr Amena-Etigo provided the communities youth sporting clubs with a total of 100 sets of Jersey and 50 footballs to organise unity games in each of the three zones as part of steps being taking to unlock the God given talents of the youth in sporting, especially football.
Beside that, the MP is supporting some of the Youth with funds to undertake skill training in carpentry, soap making, tailoring/seamstress, wielding and as well as recruitment in the security services.
To empower the rural women with business opportunities, Hon Amenga-Etigo has initiated and provided communities with Pavilions and Market Sheds for the various rural enterprises skills training of women, while some also served as their meeting centres.
Some of the these beneficiary community women groups includes Sirigu-Dazongo, Katiu, Saa Navio, Sakaa, Kazugu and Nakolo.
Again, some of the basic education institutions where students have being studying in darkness have also benefited from the MP vision as most of them have been hooked onto the national grid to supply lights for their night studies.
Some of these schools that benefited the extension of electricity includes Sirigu primary school and Amenga-Etego JHS.
